Aerial Firing in Dunipur Sparks Concern Among Residents

DUNIPUR – July 8, 2025:
An incident of aerial firing took place in Dunipur on Monday evening, sparking fear and concern among local residents. The firing reportedly occurred during a wedding celebration in the central area of the town. Eyewitnesses say that several men in the wedding procession started firing into the air as part of traditional celebrations.

What Happened?

According to local sources, the wedding ceremony was taking place in Mohallah Rehmatabad, where a large number of people had gathered. The groom’s friends and some relatives began celebratory gunfire soon after the Barat (wedding party) arrived. The sound of gunfire rang out across the neighborhood, leaving residents alarmed and anxious.

Children and elderly people were seen rushing indoors, while local shopkeepers quickly shut their businesses in fear of stray bullets. Although no injuries were reported, the act left many locals frightened and angry.

Why Did People Fire in the Air?

Locals say that aerial firing has become a common, though illegal, way of expressing joy during celebrations like weddings, births, and even cricket matches. In this case, some of the young men in the Barat claimed it was a “traditional way to celebrate” and that they had no intention of harming anyone.

One resident, Mr. Rafiq Ahmed, told reporters, “They were just trying to enjoy the moment, but this is not the right way. A bullet going up will eventually come down and can hit someone. It’s dangerous, not joyful.”

Another local, Ms. Ayesha Bibi, added, “We were scared. My children started crying and ran inside the house. This type of celebration should not be allowed.”

Legal Action and Police Response

Soon after the incident, police were informed by a few community members. A team from Dunipur Police Station reached the scene but the individuals responsible had already left. However, according to SHO Dunipur, an FIR (First Information Report) has been registered against unidentified persons, and CCTV footage from nearby shops is being reviewed to identify the culprits.

The SHO further said, “Aerial firing is illegal and a serious crime. The incident is under thorough investigation, and those responsible will face strict legal consequences.”

Public Reaction

The aerial firing has been strongly condemned by members of civil society and local leaders. Many people took to social media to express their anger, using hashtags like #StopAerialFiring and #SafeDunipur. Some users posted videos of the incident, which quickly went viral and drew criticism.

Social activist Naeem Hussain posted on Facebook: “This kind of careless joy can turn into lifelong sorrow. Authorities must ensure such acts are not repeated.”

The Dangers of Aerial Firing

Experts warn that celebratory gunfire can have deadly consequences. A bullet fired into the air can travel high and come down with enough force to injure or kill someone. There have been numerous cases in Pakistan where people have lost their lives due to stray bullets during wedding celebrations.

A local doctor, Dr. Saba Qureshi, shared: “Every year, we treat patients who are accidentally shot during such incidents. One second of joy can become a lifetime of grief for someone else.”

Government and Religious Leaders Urge Restraint

In light of the growing concerns, the local administration has appealed to the public to avoid aerial firing. Religious scholars in Dunipur also spoke against the practice in their Friday sermons, calling it both “un-Islamic” and “dangerous to life.”

Renowned Islamic scholar Mufti Habib-ur-Rehman emphasized that true Islamic teachings encourage celebrating with harmony and consideration for others. Aerial firing is not a Sunnah; it’s a crime.”

Steps Towards Prevention

To avoid future incidents, the Dunipur police announced they will increase patrolling during wedding seasons. They have also requested event planners and catering halls to inform police if a large gathering is expected, especially where music, fireworks, or firing might occur.

Locals have suggested stricter monitoring and immediate arrests to discourage the practice. Schools and colleges are also planning awareness sessions to educate youth about the dangers and legal consequences of celebratory firing.

Conclusion

The incident in Dunipur is a reminder of how old traditions, if not handled responsibly, can lead to serious danger. While celebrating weddings and joyous moments is everyone’s right, it should not come at the cost of public safety. Authorities and communities must work together to ensure that joy is celebrated with responsibility — without putting lives at risk.
