Scorching Heatwave to Persist in Pakistan Until Thursday, Warns Meteorological Department
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning that a severe heatwave will continue to affect large areas of the country through Thursday, June 12.
🌡️ Unusually High Temperatures Driven by Atmospheric Pressure
A high-pressure system that developed over the region on June 7 is causing daytime temperatures to soar well above average. The PMD predicts that temperatures in several areas will remain 5 to 7°C higher than normal, particularly in:
- Upper and Central Punjab
- Islamabad
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
- Kashmir
- Gilgit-Baltistan
These extreme heat conditions are expected to persist until midweek.
In Upper and Central Sindh, Southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan, daytime highs are forecasted to remain 4 to 6°C above seasonal norms, making conditions particularly challenging in these regions.
🔥 City Temperature Forecast
- Sibi & Jacobabad: May reach up to 48°C
- Sargodha: Expected to hit 47°C
- Lahore, Faisalabad, Chakwal, Dadu & DG Khan: Around 46°C
- Islamabad & Peshawar: Could see highs of 43°C
- Quetta & Gilgit: Around 36°C
- Karachi: Anticipated to reach 34°C
🌬️ Possibility of Strong Winds and Dust Storms
The ongoing heatwave may also lead to dust storms and gusty winds, particularly in flat areas, potentially disrupting outdoor activities and reducing visibility.
⚠️ Public Safety Recommendations
The Met Office urges residents to take essential precautions during this heatwave:
- Stay hydrated
- Limit outdoor exposure during peak heat hours
- Protect children, the elderly, and outdoor workers from excessive heat
While temperatures are expected to decrease slightly after June 12, the public is advised to remain vigilant and follow updates from official weather sources.
