Light Earthquake of 2.6 Magnitude Felt in Karachi
Karachi: A light earthquake shook several areas of Karachi late Wednesday night, with the Seismological Center reporting a magnitude of 2.6 on the Richter scale. The earthquake struck at 1:44 AM, with its epicenter identified approximately 1 kilometer from the Malir area.
Residents in areas such as Malir and Quaidabad felt the quake, which originated at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the surface. This recent seismic activity has raised concerns among the public, as Karachi has experienced a series of minor earthquakes in recent days.
Chief Meteorologist Ameer Haider stated that the tremors were triggered by the release of accumulated seismic pressure along the Landhi Fault Line. He reassured residents that the intensity of these tremors is expected to diminish over time.
Officials have confirmed that there have been no reports of damage or casualties resulting from the quake. They emphasized that such tremors are a normal occurrence due to the ongoing activity along the city’s active fault lines.
Karachi is situated near two notable fault lines: the Landhi Fault and another near Thana Bola Khan. Experts indicate that while seismic activity has increased, no significant earthquakes have been recorded on the Landhi Fault Line in the past.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, but currently, there is no major threat to the safety of the city’s residents.
