Trump Urges Israel and Iran to Strike Peace Deal, Cites India-Pakistan Example
NEW YORK: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for a peace agreement between Iran and Israel, emphasizing that diplomatic efforts are already in progress to ease rising tensions in the Middle East. Drawing parallels to his previous intervention between India and Pakistan, Trump expressed confidence that a similar resolution is possible between the two long-standing rivals.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump shared a hopeful message on his social media platform, Truth Social, expressing confidence that peace between Iran and Israel is possible. He wrote that the two nations “should and eventually will reach an agreement,” adding that he had previously encouraged dialogue between India and Pakistan by leveraging U.S. trade relations to promote understanding and stability during their talks.
According to Trump, his administration’s success in encouraging a ceasefire between India and Pakistan on May 10 was driven by strategic trade discussions and diplomatic channels. He believes the same approach can help reduce hostilities between Iran and Israel.
In an interview with ABC News, Trump revealed that multiple high-level meetings are taking place behind the scenes to facilitate peace. He even mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin could potentially play a role in mediating the talks.
“There are many ongoing discussions, and I’m hopeful. I do a more, and never get credit, but the people understand,” Trump commented. He added, “Just like we stopped the crisis between Egypt and Ethiopia over the Nile dam, peace can be achieved here too.”
The reference to Egypt and Ethiopia relates to a past dispute over the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which raised concerns among Nile River-sharing countries. Trump claimed his involvement helped ease tensions there, and he believes similar diplomatic engagement could help bring Iran and Israel to the negotiation table.
The latest Israel-Iran conflict, which escalated after military strikes on each other’s territories, has raised global concerns about a possible wider regional war. Leaders around the world, including those at the G7 summit, have expressed alarm over the potential for further violence.
Trump highlighted the significance of regional peace and shared his optimism about progress, stating that a resolution between Israel and Iran could happen soon. He mentioned that numerous discussions and communications are already underway, expressing confidence that peace is within reach.
The former president also criticized current diplomatic efforts for lacking assertiveness and claimed that his strategies, particularly using trade incentives, were effective in bringing conflicting nations to the table.
As tensions remain high in the Middle East, Trump’s public statements add pressure on global leaders to prioritize diplomatic solutions. While some experts remain skeptical about the feasibility of such a peace deal, others acknowledge that high-level negotiations, even symbolic ones, are steps in the right direction.
With ongoing unrest and uncertainty in the region, all eyes are now on whether international diplomacy, including Trump’s vocal involvement, can lead to a de-escalation between Iran and Israel.
